Elections 101 Suffrage Curriculum

Day 01 Women's Right to Vote

Main Objective

Students will develop an understanding of the 72-year history of the women’s suffrage movement in the United States, which resulted in the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920.

Students will:
  • learn about the contributions of leading suffragists, including those with Iowa ties.
  • research and analyze the goals and strategies of suffrage organizations in winning women the right to vote.

Day 02 Women's Political Participation

Main Objective

Students will learn about the history and influence of women as voters, political candidates and elected public officials in the United States and in Iowa.

  • research a woman elected official from Iowa to understand her background and qualifications, issue positions, and contributions to public policy at the state or federal level.
